This project began with a 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (996) manual as the foundation for a purpose-built Safari-style build by Safari Projek, engineered to function as a fully usable daily driver while also delivering serious capability in off-road and weekend rally environments.
To achieve this dual-purpose mission, the chassis and suspension were extensively reworked. The front track was widened by approximately 4.7 inches, while the McPherson strut top mounts were relocated outward by approximately 2.4 inches using bespoke mounts designed specifically for Reiger shock absorbers. At the rear, the track was also widened to accommodate matching wheel fitment front and rear, with revised suspension geometry optimized to improve weight transfer under braking, enhancing turn-in stability and control on loose surfaces such as gravel.
Radiator positioning and angle were adjusted to accommodate the increased wheel and tire package without altering the front overhang, preserving approach geometry. Custom suspension components were machined from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum and paired with chromoly rod-end bearings at all pivot points. Combined with the Reiger dampers, the system delivers approximately +-7.9 inches of wheel travel at both axles.
The vehicle rides on 18-inch OZ Racing wheels with 8J width, wrapped in 225/55R18 SUV-oriented tires, providing significantly increased ground clearance of approximately 11 inches for improved off-road capability.
Externally, custom-designed front and rear bumpers were fabricated, then reproduced via molds for final production. Steel bumper inserts integrate front and rear bash plates and full underbody protection, while polyurethane-coated aluminum skid plates cover the entire underside for durability in rough terrain. The rear features a center-exit exhaust integrated into a steel bumper insert, paired with a de-catted exhaust system for improved flow.
Mechanically, the 6-speed manual transmission is fitted with a traction-enhancing limited-slip differential to improve grip on loose surfaces and maximize drivability in off-road conditions. The result is a highly engineered, rally-inspired 996 4S that retains everyday usability while significantly expanding the capabilities of the platform far beyond its original design intent.
